Saint Francis of Assisi (Giovanni Francesco di Bernardone; 1181/1182 – October 3, 1226) was a unique spiritual personality who gave up a life of wealth and social position to hug a life of poverty and chastity – With the convince of the Pope, he founded a new Monastic Order, unremarkably known as the Franciscans. St Francis of Assisi is also known as the patron venerate of animals, the environment and one of the two patrons of Italy (with Catherine of Siena).
